vice president of the nra has now broken his silence. he says it's the good guys against the bad guys, and everyone should have a gun. i disagree. if you look today at the speech that we showed just earlier here on msnbc, it's the first time since the newtown mass murder that the nra has spoken out in a speech that brought out the protesters. >> see there? several protesters interrupting. the nra did not focus on regulating semiautomatic weapons in this address, an address i think can only be described as combative. wayne la pierre attacked the press, the game and movie industry, and unnamed politicians for basically getting this story wrong, and he issued a range of criticisms. he staked out his organization's solution to this problem. ultimately as more guns. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. >> there you have it. the nra called on congress to fund armed guards at every school in the nation and

after robert kennedy was killed and said, we have ten days before the nra gets mobilized. we have ten days to accomplish the bill was sitting in the judiciary committee, the gun bans, from the time when john f. kennedy was killed. and now martin luther king jr. had been killed, robert kennedy was killed. he said, you've got ten days to mobilize. you've got to get this done. they did what they could and they came up with a much smaller bill which was signed regretfully by lbj in october. >> i don't have the historical perspective that andrea does, but i have covered all the -- >> you didn't cover that '68 bill? >> no, i missed it. but i have covered the four instances of mass gun violence under obama, and i have to say the scariest thing to me with respect to newtown was when i g-chatted my fellow editor in new york to plot out coverage, and we knew exactly what to do because we had done it three times before. it had gotten so routine and so disturbing to us and i'm worried i'll be writing the same story. >> we can't desensitize ourselves to this, though. >> listen, we're not going to.

the president of the nra will be on with david gregory on "meet the press" so a big weekend to see what the nra plan to do going forward. >> exactly. i'll be on the program, as well. thank you for the plug and that does it for this edition of "andrea mitchell reports." my colleague tamron hall has a look at when's next. >> hi, andrea. plan "b" basically stands for be real. and house republicans get ready to bring boehner plan to the floor for a vote. senator reid says it's got no chance of passing the senate. what's the possible solution? >>> democratic congressman pass quell and congresswoman swartz will join us. tomorrow, the nra holds that big news conference we have been waiting for. will the organization announce support of gun control legislation? that's the gut check question of the day. the only underarm treatment for low t. that's right, the one you apply to the underarm. axiron is not for use in women or anyone younger than 18. axiron can transfer to others through direct contact. women, especially those who are or who may become pregnant, and children should avoid contact where axiro

are going to continue to the enablers of violence, namely the nra, which simply represents the gun manufacturers, which are really the merchants of death, to use a phrase from an earlier era. >> congressman jerry nadler of new york, thank you so much for being on the program. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >>> now to what congress will do the rest of this week, including the cliff negotiations. i'm joined by jonathan weissman of the new york times, great reporter, my colleague on the hill, thank you so much for being here. back to the cliff and guns on nadler, sherman was here saying there is some talk amongst leadership, but i keep beating this like a drum, doesn't seem to be any urgency on capitol hill. >> i was talking to some senators this morning, when are you going to get back into town? oh, you know, maybe tomorrow night we'll kind of come in. president obama will be coming in tomorrow night. doesn't seem the level of urgency that you would think, given that in five, six days these things are going to hit. and i think it's because they really -- i think there's a sense now
